I think you may be confusing some things. So my question to Mr Franklin is what makes you think the R will be worse than the 5D4 and please if you can site a credible source I have a R on pre-order so I would like to know, thanks. It's the usual strategy that Canon uses to sell more cameras, and, so far, it seems to be working on me.īoth the 5D4 and R are rated at 0-40C (from the Canon USA web site) with the 7DII the same and the 1DX II at 0-45C.

But, if the R reliably delivers what is claimed for it by Canon, I definitely would like to add it to my 5D4 cameras because, in some cases, it would seem to offer its own unique advantages. If the R will truly not be reliable at those lower temperatures, it could be quite a stumbling block for me.Īs it stands, I would not get rid of my 5D4 to purchase an EOS R. My 5D4 gets sluggish, but still works reliably, down to near 0 degrees Fahrenheit. I often have to shoot outdoors in temperatures below that. The R is said to be useable down to 0 degrees centigrade or 32 degrees Fahrenheit. Now, here's the more obscure fact about the R and how it is inferior to my 5D4, one that probably equally effects all mirrorless ILC's, and that is operating temperature range. We'll have to wait for better information. The jury is still out on the real world battery performance on the R. One is battery life, and this does get some attention. Even though I already have enough Canon batteries to overcome any imagined problem with short battery charge life, it still concerns me as I don't like having to stop shooting to change batteries, even if it only takes a few seconds, because, sometimes, seconds matter. As to IBIS, in case you haven't noticed, my 5D4 doesn't have it either.Īs far as I can tell, for me only, the two most regrettable things that might prevent me from getting this version of the R are ones that are either less or very infrequently mentioned on the forum. I know that dual slots are sometimes very prudent, when shooting some types of material and some card failure is inevitable, no matter how remote the odds. However, I've had more issues with camera failures over the years than card failures, so perhaps I should always shoot two cameras simultaneously to avoid that apparently bigger risk.

Finally, I have software that can open most corrupted files. In the slightly less than 20 years I've been shooting with digital, I have had exactly one instance of a card malfunction and that one was with a non-solid-state IBM Microdrive that involved three files. The second slot card on my 5D4 can't keep up with the speed of the first slot, as they are differently specified. Regardless of their cost and presumed quality, I test my cards each and every time before using them on any shoot. My reasons vary, but mostly, it boils down to spending more to buy only the best and most rugged cards, resulting in all of my cards giving me rock solid service. It might interest those of you who are curious (not too many, I would expect), that I am not really indignant about the "only one slot issue." Yes, I'd like two slots, but here's the thing: right now, with my dual slot cameras, I very seldom load two cards in them as it is.

However, this iteration of the R is clearly not meant to be at the exact same level of market segmentation than is the 5D4 hence the single card slot, slightly less weather sealing, and a few other things.
